Rumor: iPad 2 Will Come in White

Have you given up on the ridiculous saga of the white iPhone 4? It’s probably safe to say we’ll never see Apple’s embarrassing white elephant, but fear not: We have a new white iDevice rumor to replace it. Behold: the white iPad.
The rumor comes courtesy of iFixYouri, last seen leaking photos of the entire [...]

Linux Mint 10 KDE released; Mint 11 based on Ubuntu 11.04, but no Unity

Mint 10 KDE
Just a few days after the emergence of a release candidate, Linux Mint 10 KDE has been released. There are a few bugs (most notably, VLC is slow to open files), so be sure to check the full release notes.

Mint, which claims to be the 4th most popular desktop operating system (behind Windows, OS X and Ubuntu), prides itself on its elegance and out-of-the-box ease-of-use. With version 10, the only significant change is the addition of KDE 4.6, but the Software Manager and Update Manager have also received numerous tweaks. Adobe Flash 10.2 'Square' also makes its first appearance with Mint 10.

If you want to give Mint 10 a go, be sure to grab it from one of the mirrors, or use the 32- or 64-bit torrents -- the Mint site itself seems pretty slow at the moment, probably because of Mint's massive popularity...!

As far as Mint 11 goes, we now know that it will be called 'Katya', based on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, and released in May. Interestingly, Mint 11 will use neither GNOME Shell or Unity -- instead, it will use a traditional GNOME 3-based desktop layout.

Apple's Tim Cook hints at cheaper iPhone, prepaid possibilities to come?

Apple COO Tim Cook got all buddy-buddy with Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi this week, talking about Apple's business strategy -- nothing out of the ordinary there -- but this morning, that analyst decided to publicly paraphrase an intriguing part of the interview. Guess what? It sounds like a cheaper iPhone may indeed be in the cards:
While Tim stopped short of explicitly stating that Apple would pursue a lower price iPhone, he did state that Apple was working hard to "figure out" the prepaid market and that Apple didn't want its products to be "just for the rich," but "for everyone"; he also stated that Apple "understood price is big factor in the prepaid market" and that the company was "not ceding any market." Cook noted that Apple executives - including himself - had spent "huge energy" in China, noting that it is "a classic prepaid market." He further noted that the handset distribution model was poorly constructed and that Apple would look to "innovate" and do "clever" things in addressing that market.
As you can see, there aren't any statements of fact here, just some general strategy ideas, but if Apple indeed plans to put an iPhone in every pot, it would be helpful if it didn't have to rely on the carrier subsidy model.

Mac OS X Lion hands-on preview

Apple announced Mac OS X Lion with considerable fanfare at its Back to the Mac event last October, and now it's dropped the first developer preview on the world -- giving us a chance to sample some of the big cat's new features and UI concepts. We installed the dev build on one of our MacBook Pros and used it over the weekend, and while we won't be able to see any huge changes in day-to-day workflow until our favorite apps are updated to take advantage of Lion, we did see plenty of interesting system-level features and additions -- and yes, iOS's influence is all over the place. Read on for a full breakdown of what's new!

Legit Sites Could Get Caught in Google's Content Farm Crosshairs

Google on Thursday began using a new algorithm to rid its top search results of what it described as low-quality websites. This will reduce the rankings for sites that are low value-add for users, ones that copy content from other websites, or sites that just aren't very useful. Simultaneously, the algorithm will improve the rankings for high-quality sites.

Forrester: Online Retail Industry In The US Will Be Worth $279 Billion In 2015

Research firm Forrester this morning announced its forecasts for the online retail industry in both the US and Western Europe this morning. No surprise: Forrester expects both markets to grow steadily over the next few years - not an unsafe bet by any means. Forrester estimates that both US and European online retail (representing 17 Western European nations) will grow at a 10 percent compound annual growth rate from 2010 to 2015, reaching $279 billion and ?134 billion, respectively, in 2015.

Researchers debut one-cubic-millimeter computer, want to stick it in your eye

This as-of-yet-unnamed mini computer was fashioned as an implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients, but its creators envision a future where we're all crawling with the little buggers. Taking up just over one cubic millimeter of space, the thing stuffs a pressure sensor, memory, thin-film battery, solar cell, wireless radio, and low-power microprocessor all into one very small translucent container. The processor behind this little guy uses an "extreme" sleep mode to keep it napping at 15-minute intervals and sucking up 5.3 nanowatts while awake, and its battery runs off 10 hours of indoor light or one and a half hours of sun beams. Using the sensor to measure eye pressure and the radio to communicate with an external reader, the system will continuously track the progress of glaucoma, without those pesky contacts. Of course, the mad scientists behind it look forward to a day when the tiny device will do much more, with each of us toting hundreds of the computer implants all over our bodies -- looks like a bright future for cyborgdom.
