Nokia Vs. The Industry: A Look At The Global Battle Over Mobile Advertising [Infographic]

nokia-logo-may-08Mobile advertising as you've likely heard, is hott right now. (With two "t's", yes.) According to comScore, mobile advertising spend is projected to hit $2.5 billion by 2014, with $2.7 billion projected in mobile ad revenues for this year and $6.6 billion by 2016. What's more, in August, 84.5 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones, and that number continues to grow...

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance
Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

Google gets ready to play traditional TV, preps original YouTube channels

From rumors to reality: YouTube is taking a crack at original programing. Sources close to the Wall Street Journal say that the streaming outfit is partnering with a broad mix of media firms, production companies, and savvy content creators to launch 100 channels, generating over 25 hours of original content each day. Most of these channels aren't slated to launch until next year, but when they do they are said to be backed by names like Ashton Kutcher, Tony Hawk, Jay-Z, and Madonna. YouTube is reportedly paying content partners over $100 million to jump-start this project, and hopes to create quality that can be sold to Advertisers. YouTube's blog confirmed that the first of these premium channels is set to launch next month, with subsequent channels coming in waves over the next year. Hit the source link below so see YouTube's official announcement and an early list of channels and content providers. We know you'll join us in giddy anticipation of Shaquille O'Neal's Comedy Shaq Network .

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

California Finally Approves Online Voter Registration (Sadly, It?s Just 1 Of 11 States To Have Done So)

lgFP2529So, this piece of news managed to sneak under the radar, but it's worth recognizing as a victory for the Internet and for the state of California. Digital technology has been slow to come to some offline institutions, a glaring (and sad) example being the very democratic process of registering to vote (and then actually voting) in local and state elections. A few weeks ago, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that (once again) legalizes online voter registration in the state of California. As TheVotingNews points out, while California does in fact have a voter registration database, until the passage of 3B 397, residents could not fully register to vote online. Instead, voters could go through the process of filling out registration forms, but instead of hitting "approve" or "send" and closing the loop, Californians had to then print out the completed form and send it to their local county election office for approval.

Pure entering the UK music streaming market, Android app in tow

Android Central

The reign of Spotify as music subscription of choice in the UK market may be about to face its toughest challenge yet, as premium radio manufacturer Pure is ready to launch it's own service. Like Spotify, they're also bringing an Android application to market with them for all your music on the go needs.

"The Lounge" service will work, like its competitors, on any web connected PC, Mac, their own range of Internet Radio's, and of course your Android devices. Costing just £5 per month though, it's half the price of a premium Spotify subscription. 7Digital have developed the backend to the service, whose biggest drawback prior to launch seems to be lack of offline caching. With UK mobile contracts being quite strict on data usage, streaming over 3G on the go may not last very long.

As well as being able to search their massive catalogue of music, you will also be able to listen to your favourite web radio stations and podcasts on the go too, with this feature also supported in the Android application.

Check out the Pure promo video after the jump. The service is expected to launch in December, with the Android application "coming soon."
