Sandisk, Sony, and Nikon propose 500MBps memory card with more than 2TB capacity

While the CompactFlash Association scoots along at a maximum transfer rate of 167MB per second under its just released CF6.0 specification, Sandisk, Sony, and Nikon are already looking to the future. The trio have just officially proposed a new memory card format that switches from PATA to the PCI Express serial interface to achieve data transfer rates of up to 500 megabytes per second with a potential to extend maximum storage capacities beyond 2 terabytes. The proposed set of specifications hints at the high performance requirements we'll soon face as DSLRs and camcorders are updated to capture continuous burst shooting of massive RAW images and ever higher definition video. Naturally, the spec also enables photogs to transfer their troves of data more quickly to computers for post processing and combines high-speed transfer with a scaling system to extend battery life. The CompactFlash Association has already announced a new workgroup to study the proposal. Canon's Shigeto Kanda, CFA chairman of the board, had this to say about the proposal:

Future professional photography and video applications will require memory cards with faster read/write speeds. The development of a new high-performance card standard with a serial interface will meet the needs of the professional imaging industry for years to come and open the door for exciting new applications.

Sounds like tacit approval to us. And really, anything that brings Sony and Sandisk together on a future storage format should be seen as a positive step. Unless, of course, you're the SD Card Association or anyone who recently purchased a CFast card.

Scraper for Chrome lets you easily create spreadsheets from Web data

Scraping is a technique whereby a website or tool extracts select information from another website. For example, when you type a difficult word into Google and instantly see a definition for that word from some Web dictionary, that's because Google "scraped" that information from the dictionary. The term (and practice) has some negative connotations, because scrapers can be used to steal blog content and for other nefarious purposes. But as Google (and many others) show, it doesn't have to be used for evil.

Scraper is a Chrome add-on that somewhat simplifies the process of scraping information from a webpage. I say "somewhat" because you still have to know XPath or jQuery selector syntax, but that's pretty easy to master if you know a bit of HTML.

Once the extension is installed, you can right-click any page element and select "Scrape similar". You then get a window with a single table row, and the XPath expression leading to the exact element you've selected. It is now up to you to generalize that expression so as to get a broader match. As you can see in the screenshot, it was quite simple to write an expression that yields all of the post headlines and links on the DLS homepage.

Once you have the information you wanted, you can click Export to Google Docs and get a spreadsheet with all of your data in tabular form, ready for further processing.

Scraper is very much a work in progress; while jQuery selector syntax is supported, you only get the XPath expression filled in automatically (and it's too specific). Also, it does not support saving expressions as templates, so every time you want to use it, you have to re-build the XPath expression you need. I'm sure this will all get fixed in due time.

ViewMarks for Firefox makes bookmarks visual and huge

In these days of social bookmarking, ViewMarks is a Firefox add-on that sticks with the old-fashioned way of storing your bookmarks on your own computer. But this is the default behavior for Firefox anyway, so why should you get excited about ViewMarks?

It's all in the graphics -- basically, ViewMarks saves a thumbnail along with each bookmark. The result looks kind of like the Speed Dial feature used by Opera and Chrome (and Firefox, too, if you install an extension). But it applies across all of your bookmarks and folders, not just the select few that you use every day.

If you already have existing bookmarks (and who doesn't, really?), ViewMarks will not poll all of them for screenshots upon installation. Instead, as you visit each website, ViewMarks will capture its screenshot and then use it. Any new bookmarks that you add will get a screenshot the moment you add them, of course.

One odd quirk on my system was that ViewMarks kept resizing the browser window to a certain size. I suspect it did that in order to get the screenshot just right, but it really shouldn't do this. Except for this one annoyance, this can be a nice add-on if you're the visual sort.

Bell Mobility launches Netgear Turbo Hub, sends juicy HSPA+ to your WiFi and Ethernet gear

Canada's Bell appears to be taking advantage of Netgear's partnership with Ericsson on this one, putting its 21Mbps HSPA+ network to good use. Not to say that phones aren't a great use for high-speed data, of course, but that's enough bandwidth to realistically replace a home internet connection or two -- and that's exactly what the so-called MBR 1210 Turbo Hub sets out to do, spreading an incoming Bell data signal over up to 15 devices connected via WiFi and Ethernet. Interestingly, it also allows users to use the HSPA+ hookup as an automatic fallback in case your primary connection (say, DSL or cable) fails -- perfect for us "blog or die" types. You'll pay CAD $149.95 (about $147) on a two-year deal to put a Turbo Hub on your shelf, or CAD $299.95 ($294) sans contract; plans, meanwhile, range from CAD $35 to $60 ($34 to $59) for between 3GB and 10GB of data (no metric / English conversion necessary there) with a $10 surcharge to gain access to the 21Mbps signal -- you get 7.2Mbps otherwise. It's a pretty creative plan structure, and we're sure folks would appreciate an unlimited option... preferably without any extra speed fees. Follow the break for the full press release.

Winamp for Android officially announced

Despite having been available in the Android Market in beta form for a while now, Winamp for Android was never really officially announced by AOL. Today however, they've updated the app and put the official stamp of greatness on it, including full Shoutcast support. As noted on the Winamp blog, this release pushes Winamp to version 0.9.2 and adds a ton of new features to the already awesome media player. Zalman's SandForce-based N Series SSD drive gets reviewed, patted on the back

Zalman's making an SSD? You betcha, and it's embedding a SandForce SF-1222 controller in its N Series line. That controller has proven to be the go-to one for loads of solid state drives, but Zalman's joining the party a touch late. Unfortunately for it, the MSRPs affixed to the 64GB ($169) and 128GB ($289) versions aren't exactly class-leading, but the benchmarking gurus over at Legit Reviews took it upon themselves to test a 128GB model anyway. After running the gauntlet, the conclusions drawn were fairly predictable: scores were right in line with every other SandForce drive they had tested in recent months, with words like "speedy, resilient, and reliable" detailing the drive. Reviewers did point out that the pricing situation would likely hinder adoption rates, and it's still unclear if a company more closely associated with cooling accessories and cases can stake a claim in the storage realm. Tip of My Tongue helps you find that word you're looking for

It sometimes happens that a certain word eludes me. I know it exists, I even know what it sounds like or how it begins or ends -- but for the life of me, I can't recall what the exact word is. For situations like these, Tip of My Tongue can come in very handy. To find the word "download," I only had to tell it that it starts and ends with D, has W somewhere in the middle, and means "transfer."

The search is very fast, done on-the-fly, as you type. You can search by word parts (beginning, middle, end), by certain letters which it must have or can't have, or by its meaning (you get to specify up to three synonyms). You can then refine the search by specifying a minimum and maximum length, and even what the word sounds like (i.e, what it rhymes with).

To me, this seems to cover all bases. Even a vague notion of what a certain word is should be enough to hone in on that word using Tip of My Tongue. This is definitely one for any writer's toolbox.

FeedStore for Chrome lets you catch up on Google Reader news while offline

Back in May, Google axed the offline mode in Google Reader. I didn't use it that often, but it was a nice way to catch up on tech news while I made the 6-hour trek to Winnipeg from my home in the North. Thankfully, there's a new Google Chrome extension called FeedStore which brings back offline reading.

Just install the extension and you're ready to go. FeedStore adds an icon to your browser actions area and notifies you when new unread items arrive -- and stashes a copy you can read later. The reading interface is somewhat customizable, allowing you to choose a font and change the type size and line spacing. There's a dropdown for custom styles, though only the default shows for now (which is nice and clean) -- hopefully we'll see additional options added.

The downside, of course, is that a lot of sites offer truncated feeds. It would be nice if future FeedStore versions could pull the full post from source websites.

Google Wave looks set to be rescued by Apache

The Apache Software Foundation, that is, not an ominously portentous, Wagner-blaring helicopter.

The beleaguered Wave project, which Google has ceased developing, will soon shut down. Last week, Google gave us the ability to export our existing waves as Zip files, and now, thanks to Apache and the Wave in a Box off-shoot, you may soon have somewhere to import them to. It won't be exactly the same as Google Wave, but it could be pretty damn close.

The Register is reporting that the Apache Software Group is looking to roll Wave in a Box into its current management and build systems. It's currently only in the incubator phase, but the the full proposal for Apache Wave reads like a serious, concerted effort. There are a ton of Googlers on the list of code committers, at any rate.

If all goes to plan, you may soon be able to easily set up your very own Wave server, for internal collaboration efforts. Who knows, maybe big-name email and instant messaging providers like Microsoft, Yahoo and Google will one day provide an end point for our waves!

LG Star shows up again, flexes its Tegra 2 muscle for the camera

That high-end Android smartphone from LG seemingly destined for release early next year has made another appearance -- and this time, the UI's in full view and showing us a few tricks. Looks like the so-called Star will be running a variant of LG's usual Android skin, for better or worse, and the particular device shown off in Phandroid's forums here is loaded with Froyo -- a strange choice for a 4-inch beast launching in 2011 with Gingerbread around the corner, perhaps, but we certainly wouldn't put it past 'em. The owner (who actually claims to have two in his possession) was kind enough to run it through Quadrant, producing a score of 1759 -- fantastic for a stock device, and a score that'll undoubtedly go through the roof once hackers get their hands on these things and start trimming the fat. Between this, the LU3000, and that unnamed LTE device for Verizon, these guys could be a serious Android force in '11, couldn't they?

Facebook launches 'next generation messaging', sounds a lot like Google Wave

Extolling the virtues of what messaging should be -- seamless, instant, personal and simple -- Mark Zuckerberg has just launched what sounds just like a socially-aware version of the now-defunct Google Wave.

It is not email -- though you will get a username@facebook.com email address -- but it handles email. It's a messaging platform that interweaves all of your incoming messages, be they SMSes, emails or instant messages into one big dashboard.

The most exciting prospect is the idea of a 'social inbox', which is basically an automatic email whitelist. Instead of being forced to hand-create lists of 'favourite' friends that skip your spam filters, Facebook's new messaging platform will automatically filter mail from your Facebook friends, your friends-of-friends, and so on.
